About Charlene Mitchell
A native of Toledo, Ohio, Charlene made history as the first African American woman to work as a TV news reporter in her hometown. Her career quickly advanced, taking her to major stations in Baltimore, Washington, D.C., and Boston, before she chose to settle in metro Detroit to be closer to family. In Detroit, she served as a news reporter for both WJBK-TV and WXYZ-TV. She is also the former host of Potpourri on Barden Cablevision (now Comcast) and currently hosts The Charlene Mitchell Show on YouTube.
Her successful career in television news led her to teach broadcasting and run the student radio station at Southfield High School. While teaching and working on television she formed her own agency, Media Consultants. She represents a wide variety of clients, providing Public Relations, Marketing and Advertising services. She has operated the agency for 30 plus years.
In addition to her Emmy Awards, Ms. Mitchell has been honored with numerous accolades, including the Associated Press Award for Outstanding News Reporting, the American Cancer Society Award for Outstanding Reporting, the Michigan Chronicle’s Women of Excellence Award, the Spirit of Detroit Award, and recognition in Real Times Media’s Who’s Who in Black Detroit. She has also received the Hero Award from Building Better Men, was inducted into the Woodward High School Hall of Fame in Toledo, Ohio, and earned the Helping Hands Foundation’s Excellence in News Reporting Award, among several others.
In addition to her work, Charlene served on the Board of Directors for The Ronald McDonald House of Detroit and AugMe International. She is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and a Life member of the NAACP.
Charlene has traveled extensively to numerous countries and world destinations including France, Spain, Korea, Egypt, Ghana, Mexico, Hawaii, Morocco, Puerto Rico, Turkey, Portugal, Greece, and various islands in the Caribbean.
